Treating others with empathy builds self-worth.

Luella had empathy for Roger he had the emotion, at the end of the story, feeling self worth. When Luella gave Roger the ten dollars, he couldn't think of anything else to say, but thank you ma’am. “Now here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.” “The boy wanted to say something else other than “Thank you. ma’am” to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, but he couldn't do so. I think that it shows how his feeling changed from the beginning, being a robber, and to the ending where he felt worthy of being looked after. So to me since he was treated with self worth he became a better person.

In the movie the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Bruno a young boy, whose father is one of the generals of the Nazi’s in WWII. Bruno moves from a small town in Germany to the country side, it seems to be all quiet. Until Bruno goes exploring on in the woods near his new house, sadly not far away from his house is a concentration camp. Bruno discoverers the camp, he goes to the giant fence every day but, eventually a boy, about his age, named Shmuel sits at the fence, on the other side. Bruno becomes friends with him; they ate together, played together, even though they were different. I think that this represents “treating others with empathy builds self-worth”, because Bruno had such empathy for Shmuel that he helped him find his dad (which endangered his life), and Shmuel had self worth because he felt like that he was worthy of being recognized and being helped, which is exactly what Bruno did for him.

These two examples of “treating others with empathy builds self worth” can relate to one another because each victim or person in need of empathy is guided from a person who is in a better position in life than them. By making them feel worthy it has granted them self worth. Just like in thank you ma’am the apprentice, or the less worthy one who needs the sympathy, builds self worth because the more wealthy person or wiser guides them to become a better person.

Betrayal Scars the soul.

Betrayal can scar the soul is shown in "Lamb to the Slaughter" where the protagonist, Mary Maloney seems like to me she did not get scared from the betrayal of her husband. After her everyday kindness of preparing drinks and tidying the home for her husbands return. As she is waiting for his arrival she sits and listens for the tire on the gravel. When he walks through the door she leans in for a kiss and says the usual. She tries to comfort him by offering food and snacks, but nothing seemed to please him. But then after rejecting everything she has to offer he simply tells her "I am leaving you." In outrage she kills him will a frozen leg of lamb from the freezer. I think that this shows a double betrayal, because he first betrays her from leaving her. Then she betrays him from killing him. But it is weird in the quote "Betrayal scars the soul." it means that if you betray someone, you with get scared, but it seemed that neither were scared. The husband definitely was not scared, but maybe the fact that Ms. Maloney killed her husband maybe that proves that she was scared and the only way to get ride of it was to kill him...

The 1 million South African workers planning to go on strike for a raise. A week ago the south african government promised to raise them, but only to 700 Rand a month. But all the employees could not pay there rent with only 700 Rand. The government said "We are trying to bring them to their knees," Cembi told CNN by phone from Johannesburg, referring to the South African government. "We took a decision yesterday that we would go on strike indefinitely until our employer gives us a better offer." This was quoted on the day of the strike. They workers intended to raise there wages for housing allowance to 1,000 Rand a month ($138). This shows betrayal because the government had promise an increase in housing allowance so they could afford the rent for there houses, and the government had not given enough. The government said that they would give no more than 700 Rand. This was recorded on August 18, 2010.

Betrayal is described as "seduce and desert" and to fit that description, Mary Maloney seduced her husband in a way by offering him snacks, drinks, and even doing everything for him. And then he deserts her by leaving her for someone else. And knowing that without a husband her perfection would be destroyed so she had to get rid of him. As she saw it, if she had the loss of her husband it would make her sound better instead of her being left. In my article the government in a way seduced the workers by telling them that he would increase their housing allowance, so they could afford their housing expenses. But he deserted them by leaving them with no where near enough money.
